    Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM + 58mm-72mm step up ring + ET65 = ?

This sounds complicated, but... I'm gonna be getting a Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM for my next lens. First, I'll be using this lens on a 1.6x body, so I figure I can get the ET65 hood (designed for the 85mm f/1.8 USM) without getting any vignetting. Second, my current lens is a Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM which uses a 72mm filter ring, and I have a nice 72mm pinch cap (best $5 I've ever spent, Canon's caps are so annoying lol). The cap is also leashed onto my camera body so I don't lose it.

So my question is this: does anyone know if the step-up ring will fit inside the lens hood? I'm worried the diameter of the lens hood will be just a bit too small.

    Thanks,

    ~Matt

so what do you want to do with the 72mm filter on the 50/1.4?

Forget about step up rings - our first question should have been does the ET-65III hood for the 85mm f/1.8 lens actually fit on the 50mm f/1.4. The answer is no. The 50mm f/1.4 takes the ES-71II hood. The number in the hood designation refers to the diameter of the mount where the hood attaches to the lens. Trying to put a 65mm diameter (at the mount ring, the other end is wider) hood onto a 71mm diameter mount is proabably not quite as bad as sticking a large square peg in a small round hole, but still, it's unlikely to work very well...

Hmm, I thought I read somewhere that the ET65 worked on the 50 f/1.8 and f/1.4 and didn

So I finally got around to ordering the stuff from BH and it just came in. What I did was throw a 72mm-58mm step down ring on the 28-135mm lens. On my 1.6x body, I can
