I use the 24-105 and its a fantastic lens. Tough as old boots, has never let me down in rain, snow, sand whatever. Its sharp as i want and does everything well. Its an excellent general pupose lens. I use it on a 7D and a 1DSMK3 and never had a problem. Sure its not a top of the line prime but think of other things before you buy. Perhaps the best advice is go this web sites reviews, read up on the 17-55 and 24-105, check out the ;ens comparisons. Remember, its an L for a reason. Canon dont make poor L lens

I think both the 17-55 and 15-85 are better general purpose lenses for a 7D than a 24-105(focal range-wise, since I'm very happy with the IQ from my 24-105). There's one thing that you shouldn't forget and that is weathersealing. If you think your style requires it, think again about the lenses you consider.

    Good luck!

Also consider the need for weather sealing. Since you do a lot of avian work, you seem to be the outdoorsy type. If you plan on doing a lot of wider angle photography outside, weather sealing may be an important factor. In which case, you should probably consider the 16-35 or 17-40 in order to maintain that wide focal range. You won
