I normally set mine to 105 as well (when I remember) that's the max on a 580EXII. But as Rocco said, the better beamer works very well to give you amore reach when needed. Just this last weekend I had kind of an odd issue. While shooting hummers @ about 11 ft with my 500 and extension tube, I kept getting images where the bottom third of the frame was dark, I readjusted my flashes several times but it kept happening, Thoroughly confused I consulted the owners manual and led me to believe that if I widened my flash, then it would correct my problem and it did. I was actually fairly surprised by this. I just assumed that 105 mm flash would be much wider than a 500mm image especially at 11 feet---so, when working at this close range with the flash, I either widen the flash to about 80mm or tilt the flash down a notch--both seem to work.

Sorry for the long answer, but since this just happened to me, I thought it might be helpful if someone elsehad experienced the problem.

Thanks,

Bob
