    Yes, it's common. In my experience, the post processing takes about twice as much work as the shooting, so it would really be more fair to pay on delivery of the final photos. But that significantly increases the risk of not getting paid, because it will be after the stars have left their eyes, cold hard reality hits them in the face. If you do accept payment on delivery, it should only be in trade for something else to offset your additional risk (such as a higher cost).
