Thanks guys for your responses. I'm actually really happy with this lens, the good points out-weigh the bad. The lens is in brand new condition, all the filters that I have for the 50mm 1.8 fit the 52mm thread, no lens hood required and the image quality is as good as I was expecting. It also does what I wanted it to do, that is, take the occasional macro shots and serve as a portrait lens. The noise doesn't bother me. Even the extending focus is not as hard to manage as you might think. All the essential features are there - so I'm happy. I've just got off lightly on learning the lesson to be more careful in doing my research and checking the listing.
Does anybody want a ET-67 hood and a Tripod mount? lol!
Oh, BTW, a couple of you commented on one of my images from this lens on my Flickr account. So I thought I'd share here:

100mm 2.8 (Non-USM) macro, 30D, f2.8, ISO 3200. One of those spur of the moment shots.
