I went on a scouting trip this morning, looking for a good vantage point for a sunrise shot along this lake near Canmore, Alberta. It is a very windy spot, so the lake has been blown clear of snow. That also makes the shooting conditions a little bit challenging. I used crampons to walk on the ice, but the cold wind was a bit much for my fingers. I gave up on using a grad filter, and did a 3-shot HDR instead. Then I ran back to the car to recover. Altogether, it was a lot of fun and I'll be back for more!

Canon 5D2, 24 mm TS-E, f/11, 3 exposures at 0.3, 0.6, and 1.3 sec

DD, This is a great shot of a house finch. great exposure, Sharp at the eye, beautiful Bokeh and pleasant background. The only thing I can think of that would improve this shot is to move the bird a little higher in the frame. Otherwise perfect.

Jonathan - That is beautiful. Love the color and the reflection off the ice. Just a great overall shot... well worth the cold hands.

Thanks Mark and Pat. Yes I do like the reflection off the ice... I was really hoping for that. The temperature was mild by our standards, only -7 C, but the windchill was insane. Next time I want to try a low-angle shot with the tilt-shift lens, getting right close to the ice and using those cracks as leading lines in the composition. Stay tuned..!

Denise I agree with Bob's comments --- great shot. If there is no room to move the bird up in the frame, I would just crop off a bit from the top of the image, and make it more square. Who says all our shots have to be rectangular, anyway. I'm looking forward to seeing the spring birds arrive here again (some long, distant time from now).

Jonathan, that definitely ranks at the top of one of the most beautiful HDR shots I have seen, truly superb!!

@ Bob & Jonathan - thanks for the feedback. I wasn't very pleased with the excess at the top either. I couldn't move it down any so I think I will change it to more of a square crop as suggested. Thanks!

I am loving this 5D mk II. Here are some shots from a trip to "Grits and Groceries" its a little diner in the middle of nowhere South Carolina, that has terrific food. This is my wife (left) and her mom and dad (right).

@Dave, Out of curiosity, why such a fast aperture and shutter speed? Obviously you had a ton of light. Your DoF gets the chicken in-focus, why not bring it to f/5.6 or f/8?
