I thought it was a throwback to the days of horseback. By being on the left side of the road it allows better use of the swordhand which is traditionally the right hand.

Slashing, no.
Downunder we still carry our jousting poles and JRW is correct most of us are right handed so we can be ready for a challenge and impromptu joust.
