The only thing that I could think of is that the Superteles are worth a lot more, if someone borks them from installing their own firmware it's a lot more expensive to replace (although they could try to argue 'user error', but they'd be trying to keep Big White owners happy). Borking a Pancake on firmware upgrade, they can argue 'user error' against people with less investment, and even if they do replace it at the end of the day, it won't cost them as much as repairing a Big White.
All that said though, it's more than likely a Camera Firmware issue. But then they'd need 8 or 9 firmwares for all current(ish) cameras (including the M). So maybe it is Lensware after all?
