I went to the UK this year with no 17-5x f2.8 lens. I had my 24-105, which worked for many situations, but I was really kicking myself for not buying or renting a wide-and-fast zoom. I was really missing such a lens when shooting inside cathedrals and such. First thing I did when I got back was buy a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (non-VC). I love it. If you have the money, get the Canon. If you don't think you'll miss the IS, get the Tamron for about half the price.
