wow ! i wish i could take pictures like that.
just a question , why would you go 1600 iso and not a lower number with faster shutter ? is there a reason or just personal preference.

In your question I think you have the relationship between ISO and shutter speed mixed up a little. Increasing the ISO shifts the exposure to the right (brighter) by amplifying the sensor signal thus allowing you to use a faster shutter speed and still get the same exposure. I was mostly trying to get a sharp image without underexposing it so I purposely increased the ISO to allow me to use a faster shutter speed and thus "freeze" the action.
It was shady and these birds are constantly moving their head so I was trying for as much shutter speed as possible with a reasonable ISO that would still allow good IQ. With a lower ISO it would require a slower shutter speed to get proper exposure and then run the risk of a blurred image because the subject isn't very still.

I know I haven't posted much here lately. Since selling all of my good lenses, I've lost a lot of confidence in my shots being worthy of posting. So yep, I've become more of a creeper lurking in the shadows ...LOL! Everyone's photos here are so breathtakingly beautiful and a joy to always view in all of the threads!
I did manage to get a few Baltimore Oriole shots in my backyard today that turned out alright for having to use a Kenko 2x extender on my Sigma 50-150mm. I'm still working on getting better hb shots but this one will have to do since it is my best for now ...

Denise--great to see you posting....I've seen enough great photos go by on Flickr recently...you would do well with a pin hole camera
I am finally getting back to post-processing the remainder of my Costa Rica pictures. I recently came across this and liked it so I thought I'd share:

Wow, some amazing shots here. Be careful that Pileated WP doesn't peck at your lens, Joel. He looks that close.
Great shots, Denise. Haven't seen any BO's here yet.
Brant, Costa Rica keeps floating to the top of our vacation destination list. I'm worried I'll spend too much time photographing birds and such, though.
