I've never seen one, but it looks like a "Little Blue Heron."
Great detail, especially around the eye.
I think you're right.....Little Blue Heron

I was sorting through 2014 pictures and found this shot of a young Bald Eagle. Taken while kayaking the Manistee River with my wife.

Playing with the new 500mm again today.
This guy was out yesterday and again today. Took this with the 1.4x at 700mm with the 1D IV.

Looks like it's sharp and very well focused...did it require any micro-adjustment?
It did require some adjustment.
At 500mm the 5D II is at 0, the 1D IV is at -2 to -3 and the 7D II is at +6. This is the second 500mm II, the first was similar but it had a sharpness issue and I exchanged it. This one is a keeper I think.
I haven't tested at 700mm, but the 1D IV seems to be very close. Looking at the woodpecker I thought maybe it was front focusing because the DOF starts to fall off on the beak, but the way the bird is sitting and such a narrow DOF it is probably right. Once it warms up a bit I will go out and check.
Some images from yesterday in my back yard....usual suspects around here
All of these were with the 1DX, 700mm, ISO 3200, f/5.6, 1/1250 sec.
PS: I did RAW conversion this time with DPP 4.0 ... I like the colors maybe even better than Adobe Camera Raw.
