Beautiful shot, Jon! Getting north to see (photograph) the Norther Lights is on my "list".
    There is beauty in simplicity.

    1DX | 16-35L II | 24-70L II | 50/1.2L | 70-200/2.8L IS II | 100L Macro | 100-400L II | 300/2.8L IS II | 1.4x III TC | 2x III TC | 580EX II | MT-24EX | lots of stuff

Thanks everyone! I was definitely thrilled with the show. Newcomers to this site might like to refer to an article I wrote a while ago on aurora photography:
    http://community.the-digital-picture...ead.php?t=7457

Exposure is always a bit of a guessing game, but your histogram is the key to success. Pay special attention to the green channel (not just the overall brightness histogram). Adjust the shutter speed until the green is within 80% of the right side (full brightness). If the aurora is moving quickly, jack up the ISO until you can get the shutter speed to 4 seconds or less, to eliminate blur. The 24 f/1.4 LII is a fantastic aurora lens. I usually use it at f/2.0 to minimize coma (stretched stars) in the corners. And a full-frame camera is a huge benefit as well, in terms of wide angle view and low noise.

    Happy shooting!

This week's winner was Jonathan Huyer's "Northern Magic." When scrolling through the thread, the image stopped me in my tracks and made me utter a quiet "wooow.."

Thanks very much --- there are always great submissions on the weekly challenge, which inspire me tremendously. I think a lot of you can relate to this kind of image... it is a location that I staked out a long time ago, and I had been waiting for just the right conditions to appear. Finally the show happened, and I was lucky enough to be able to get there in time. I hope it happens again soon... it was really quite fantastic. And definitely a nice topper to 2014.
