Western Meadowlarks are fairly common east of Calgary... it's about time I went out and got a shot. They have a beautiful and long song, so if you fire off a fast burst you're likely to get a shot with its beak wide open.

    Canon 1D3, 300 mm f/2.8 lens with 1.4 TC, 1/1250 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 200

That is a fabulous shot of a beautiful song bird. It is our state bird and I have only seen the guy once!

Thanks! I have the same problem with our provincial bird, the Great Horned Owl, which manages to evade me on a regular basis..!

Denise ... very nice, is that a female Red Winged Blackbird? Strange coincidence because I went to a local woodland refuge this afternoon to see what was about and the only thing I found that was cooperative was a Red Winged Blackbird! Took this with the 500mm hand held on the 1D MKIV.

    Great shot Joel!

Denise, I would have never even thought that was a red-winged blackbird. Wow, learned something new today!

That baby robin is awesome! Boy they are ugly without feathers though.

Great shot, Joel! Yes, I believe mine is a female R-W, I had to look it up because they look nothing like the male!

Here is a shot I took of a baby robin in a nest in my backyard bush. There are actually two in the nest but I guess only one was hungry!
