I don't believe that is true at all. Even before gapless sensors, the gaps were small. With gapless sensors, it seems MP seems even less relevant to SNR.

If Nikon comes out with a 36mp full frame camera with an autofocus as good as the D700 has ad it costs < $3000, it will be difficult not to switch.

I *know* everyone has different needs, and Canon doesn't tailor their product line to me. But I just want a full frame camera on which I can use an autofocus point other than the center one, and I don't want to drop $6K to get it.

    Am I the only one?

I chose a Canon, over the internet, without having ever handled one. Why? Because I tried a Nikon D40. You see, I read that KR nutjob

My collaborator had two Nikon D90s come back with loose lens/body connection after one field excursion. You had to hold the lens to the mount with added pressure to get the camera to recognize the lens. My 10D went on tons of field excursions with no structural problems. At this point, I figured that similarly-priced Nikons weren

This is why I went with Canon:

In 1992 a $5,000 elk hunt and a fogged Nikon scope on a Ruger 1 chambered for 300 Weatherby. You save all year for this trip, buy new equipment, ride horse back 5 miles in to the mountains in Montana in 2' deep snow, walk another mile up the side of a mountain in the freezing cold...and then your gear fails you tend to remember things like this....

When it time to buy a camera some 16 years later, I rember back and think...if Nikon can't make a decent rifle scope how can they make a decent camera lens.....

Other than that, who would buy a camera from a company who's spokesperson is Charlie Sheen and Bruce Willis's replacement.

    Jamie Oliver?

    .

    I used a nikon
once earlier this year, a 5100 or whatever is the 1000D equivalent. The
owner was really old and had gotten it as a present, it had lain in a
box a few weeks unopened, so I set it up for him. First thing it does is
ask me for date and time, and timezone which was nice. I played around
with it for maybe half an hour (he didn't have a card so I couldn't do
much). One thing that first got me is that in auto-iso mode I could set a
minimum and maximum in the range. My 7D can't do that, stuck at
100-3200 only. I know my mum's 2006 Pentax IST*DL can do it. But then a
few weeks later I find out my sister's 550D can also set it. Stupid 7D.
Anyway, I'm sure any of us having a proper play with a nikon menu will
be just as confused as a nikon pro playing with a canon, it's all about
what you're used to. Some things can be made easier, like button
re-assignment on my 7D, I hear not many other bodies do that barring 1DX
and pentax 645D (I hear the pentax 645D and the 1DX have both finally
added a dedicated-button to MLU). Shifting the DOF button, adding the frontal-joysticks, another portrait-oriented back joystick are all features I hope trickle down from the 1DX to future bodies too.

Other than that i've never played much with nikons, I suppose I
went for Canon originally because of recommendations from all my
friends, so far I know 3 people with 5/1-series bodies, and another few
    with 550/1000Ds (I even know a girl with a 17-55/2.8 on her 1000D).
Besides the abovementioned nikon I played with this year, I only know 1
other nikon-user (met him after I bought my kit), with a D300s or so.

    One
thing the nikons have over the canons are the low-light obviously. The
canons have had full frame digital for a long time before nikon got
there though. And nikon-mount is found in a lot of laboratory
microscopes (but then, a simple adapter and you can use it with a
canon-body). Actually, with an adapter, canon bodies can use more nikon
lenses than even the pro nikon bodies. And Canon have gone as long as a
1200mm lens, but nikon have had a 200-400mm for a lot longer than the
canon vapourware version. Canon has 50 & 85/1.2, nikon don't go
faster than 1.4 right now (they did do 50, 55, 58 f/1.2, but then canon
have done 50 f/1.0 and 0.95). And canon has the MP-E 65. Canon has had tilt+shift for a lot longer, nikon only just brought out their first PC-E with tilt 2 years ago. Canon also has
free DPP, Nikon you have to pay for something (or use Digikam/UFRaw).
BTW, none of these mentioned differences I actually knew before buying
my body. I never even bothered researching nikons much (but if i had, i
still probably would have taken the 7D over the D300s for the 50% more
    pixels)

Basically, every kit has advantages and disadvatages, and take
what you need. If the 5D3 gets absolutely trounced by the D800 in specs
and performance, then I might consider picking one up for low-light and
landscapes. I can always adapt my samyang 35 to nikon, or sell it, buy
the nikon version, and get an adapter so I can still use it on my 7D.
But i'm not selling my 7D and 70-300L, probably ever (unless someone
offers me the 1D4 + 200-400 as a swap). If I ever try a nikon, being
able to process the RAW files will be a big factor, so it'd mean renting
(or at least trying in a shop with my CF card) before I even thought
    about it...
An awful lot of electrons were terribly inconvenienced in the making of this post.

The 7D has full auto-iso mode, where the 5D II does not. The 1D IV you can set the minimum and maximum. Hopefully these are options that will trickle down to all the future models.
