    You're right about the sync speed ... with small birds at close range you would seldom get a sharp image with 1/250 sec so I always keep my flash on high speed sync.


    And yes, I always take test shots (even when not using flash) and look at the image and the histogram to adjust exposure keeping in mind I am trying to keep my shutter speed and my depth of field appropriate for the image, hopefully without having to go too high with the iso but that is usually my last concern.


    If I have a very cooperative subject sometimes I will take multiple shots and quickly move the f-stop or shutter speed up and down by 1/3 stop or so just so I have different exposures to choose from.

    can see from this picture (NOT MINE) can be spectacular:
