Haven't been out taking photos for a loooonnnngggg time. New house had some roof problems so I have been busy with that. But, I'm heading to New Mexico in a couple weeks and should be shooting a lot (I need a vacation). Anyways, my friend and I went on our yearly Crotaphytus collaris (Collared Lizard) search yesterday. Unlike last year, we were successful this year:

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. I left this one all natural, as this was the first lizard I have shot in about a year that wasn't tied down; i.e., I didn't have a collecting permit to capture this species. So, as I sprawled out on the ground (getting numerous ticks in the process) with my "lizard lens (300mm f4L IS), a friend of mine moved around behind me to elicit the lizard to change positions. For some reason this worked with this guy. Typically they just run away. Collared lizards are pretty fast and will run on only their hind legs. I always wanted to get a shot of that, but I have never been successful to this date.

I had no idea how difficult it was going to be to get the pic w/ the wings open. I know I humor my wife, last spring I was doing the macro shot of the bee in the crape myrtles, with my 70-200 & extension tubes. This one is the butterfly flitting around the flowers in our front yard and me cursing as I couldn't get a pic w/ the wings all the way open w/ the 5dIII and the 70-200 w/ the 2x Tc. 5k of camera gear and couldn't get a pic of a butterfly. She was laughing so hard she snorted.![]()
