I use the 24-105 and its a fantastic lens. Tough as old boots, has never let me down in rain, snow, sand whatever. Its sharp as i want and does everything well. Its an excellent general pupose lens. I use it on a 7D and a 1DSMK3 and never had a problem. Sure its not a top of the line prime but think of other things before you buy. Perhaps the best advice is go this web sites reviews, read up on the 17-55 and 24-105, check out the ;ens comparisons. Remember, its an L for a reason. Canon dont make poor L lens

Also consider the need for weather sealing. Since you do a lot of avian work, you seem to be the outdoorsy type. If you plan on doing a lot of wider angle photography outside, weather sealing may be an important factor.
