Help 50D or mark II with lens

What lens is it that broke?





As for bodies - if ISO is the issue here, you may want to consider the 50D. Otherwise, I would go for the 40D, and buy better glass. Many people have said this before, and I'm ready to say it again: Focus on glass. I would discourage a "just until my other tele is fixed" lens purchase. What I suggest is to buy the body, 40D, if it suits your needs, and then check out glass that will suit your needs at the present, and in the future. Consider L zooms - like the 70-200 2.8 IS. Or even less expensive primes - 135 f/2. Or even less expensive primes - 85 f/1.8.

i have a 1500 budget

I would definitely get the most glass possible. Here are some options:

• used 40D
• used 70-200/2.8L

-OR-

• used 50D
• used 70-200/4L

-OR-

• used 40D
• used 70-200/4L
• used 1.4x or 85/1.8 or 50/1.4 or 430EX II

i NEED better noise up to 800 how will it handle on both cameras.

Should be better than the XT.

how is the sigma lens.

I've never used it but I'd stick with Canon.

Iknow 50d has better noise but by how much?

I guess the 50D will give about 25% better performance. (Ie, I expect iso800 on the 1DII to be about like iso1000 on the 50D).


Just an estimate based on 1) I own a 5DII and a 1DIIN, and I think 5DII is similar at 3x the iso 2) guessing 1DII and 1DIIN are about the same (just a guess) 2) guessing 50D and 5DII are similar per unit area.

Don't guess. Go to dxomark.com and compare the cameras in question. Looks to me like the 1D Mark II is lower noise than the 50D, which doesn't surprise me.

Yup, according to dxomark, that's true.


I'm not sure I 100% belive dxomark. Or maybe I don't 100% understand them. In particular, I'm not sure if or how they normalize these iso numbers for sensor size. I read their explanation and either they dont' explain well enough or I don't understand well enough.

Hopefully someone who really knows will answer, because I sure don't .


Normally I like to believe hard data. But DXOMark also says ISO1815 on a 5DII is like iso1431 on a sony alpha, and based on images I've seen on the internet, sony alpha is about 2 stops worse than the 5DII. Sure, I was probably looking at jpgs and they're comparing raws, but this is a *big* difference.
