I agree with the 24-70 & 135. I lived in Japan for three years back in the 80's. Most of my people shots on the street was with a 200. The older generation will not like you taking their picture. They feel you are stealing part of their soul. I had one lady get pretty mad at me.

Thanks guys! One last thing, should I bother bringing my Gitzo GT0531 carbon fiber tripod to Japan for landscapes and long exposure shots?
If you're asking if you have to, then my answer is no. There are enough options available once you're over there to get you by. If you're asking me if I would, I'd say yes. I'm sure the reason you bought it is because of weight, compactness, and sturdiness. These are all things I remember when I leave mine at home and am trying to make due with what I have.
