Re: Canon EF-S 30 f/1.4 USM on my wishlist

I'm in the minority too, as I purchased my Rebel with multiple lenses, but if they've made 70M lenses and 50M cameras, then the average Canon DSLR owner has 1.4 lenses. The people who are into it, such as the people who would seek out TDP, we tend to have several lenses, and even longer wish-lists. These are balanced by the even larger number of casual DSLR users with the mass-market rebel kits with one or two lenses (18-55 and potentially either 55-250 or 70-300).

It's not really as bad as 1.4 lenses each though, as people do upgrade bodies, lowering the apparent average. Still, I'd bet it's near 1.5 or 1.6.

We like our 50. We love our 85. A 35 would be nicer for indoors. I'd love a collection of cheap, light, fast EF-S primes, but I don't think they're coming.

I first owned the Canon 35mm f/2. I was unimpressed by the build quality, the image quality, and the AF. I felt I needed something just a smidge wider, too. I sold the Canon and got the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. I'm thoroughly happy with the Sigma.

That seems to be the story I've heard elsewhere. I'm unlikely to ever go to a FF body too, so that con of the Sigma doesn't bother me. In fact the only thing that does is the possible focussing issues, but I'll make sure to buy it local so I can return it easily and in person.

    Thanks for the comment.

I was in that spot a month ago too, and was about to pull the trigger on the canon 35/2 when a 2nd-hand samyang 35/1.4 came on ebay that I got for exactly the same price as a new canon 35/2. Biggest drawbacks are the MF-only, of course, but the IQ more than makes up for it.

And the size is nowhere near small, about the same size as my EFs 15-85.

If canon came out with an EFs 28-35ish f/1.4-1.8 in the same size as a niftyfifty, and the IQ was better than the EF 35/2, i
An awful lot of electrons were terribly inconvenienced in the making of this post.
