thanks for all the pointers guys ! i thought i had the shutterspeed high enough because the lens has IS. those shots were also from inside the truck and it was nasty cold that day. i did notice heat waves but didnt think the would show up in the camera. Brant mentioned sharpening in lightroom , ive tried that and dabbled with noise reduction and honestly i suck at it lol. i will try to get closer next time as long as it isnt -30* .

IS won't stop subject motion, and running animals can be fast! I have shot where I was panning with our dog, and you can see the dog sharp due to panning, but the grass around her was blurred. If I hadn't been panning, it would have been sharp grass, and a blurry dog. These were at 1/1600 and 1/2000.

Even 1/8000 won't freeze hummingbird wings, for example. That often takes faster than 1/20,000 s, which is achieved by Speedlites on low power (1/128 power has a duration faster than 1/30,000 s), usually a group of flashes for sufficient light.

Ask the land owner if you can place some deer feed about 20-30 yards from the road

Make sure you specify what kind of shooting you intend on doing, though... ;-)

I'd argue that the statement above is almost nullified by the statement below.

With a "white-box" camera, and a 100-400 zoomed in max, you're looking at an EFL of 640mm, so the classic rule of thumb (non-IS) says you'd need at least 1/640th shutter speed. According to Bryan's review, the IS unit in the 100-400 is good for two stops, so you could perhaps assume 1/160th is enough. However, a cup of coffee could knock 1-2 stops off your steadiness, and I'd guess the same for shivering in cold conditions. I'd figure you either had the window up, in which case you had additional muck to shoot through, or you had the window down, increasing the effects of the cold.

I found the shots I was thinking of that illustrate this nicely: Click through to Flickr to see the blurry grass, uh, less clearly.

With the new 'intuitive' Flickr interface, to see the full size images, click on the "..." to the right, and choose "Download/All Sizes", and then pick 'original'. You used to be able to do this by right clicking on an image, but I guess that was too hard.

I see my post processing has improved since 2011.

i got back out today and tested a few things. shooting from inside the car results in NO real nice shots , even sticking the camera as far out the window as i can i can still see the distortion from heat waves. also heat coming off the pavement was causing a bit of blur. walked to the other side of the road and it cleared right up. i also used a higher shutter speed varying between 1/1250 and /1600 results were much more encouraging. thank you very much for all your help guys ! here are a few of the better ones from today
