Amanda and I just got back from Wichita, KS where we were visiting with Amanda's best friend Danielle and her new fiance, Kamron.
While I was there, Danielle asked if I could take a picture of her ring which paid homage to Kamron's job as a railroad engineer. The request proved tricky for a couple of reasons.
First, photographing on an active railroad is not only dangerous, it's illegal. And second, I had left my macro lens at home.
We tackled the first problem by finding a large pile of unused railroad spikes near an abandoned railroad station platform. The rails there might still be used (I'm not sure if they are or not), but the pile of spikes was positioned well away from the tracks thereby eliminating any danger.
In lieu of a macro lens, I used the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM mounted to my 7D Mark II to capture the image. The compression at 250mm and reasonable minimum focus distance allowed me to frame the scene adequately for this particular ring shot.
