This flight image has the same camera settings as my previous post....the 7D MKII has a focusing system that is on par with the 1DX in my opinion. It really does a fabulous job of locking onto birds in flight.

I understand ... I ordered the 7DMKII with thoughts of probably returning it and saving for a 5Ds but I think I'm gonna keep it. It's light, easy to handle and is a stellar performer although it can't compare to the 1Dx in low light. Also for birds the 1.6 crop factor really helps to get a lot of pixels on the subject. Here is another example:

    7DMKII
    300mm f/2.8L + 1.4 TC
AV mode with +2 stops EC (and it was still underexposed)
    ISO 400
    f/6.3
    1/2000

Had a chance this week to take the 7DII on a fishing trip to Weiss Lake in north east Alabama......I was surprised to find a large flock of Pelicans there.

    Joel,

Congratz on the new camera. I like the little bit of resolution boost from the extra pixels the 7D II gives.

I am looking forward to the 5Ds R. Last weekend shooting Turkeys I did to good of a job with the blind, I started with the 7D II and had to switch because of to much focal length. I want to see what the 5Ds R will look like with a properly framed 50mp turkey.

We hear quit a bit about low light so a few times since I bought the 7D II I monitored the light and when it became unacceptable or acceptable depending on sunrise and sunset. After ISO 800 I am not impressed with the 7D II and that is my cut off. I watched the light on Saturday, overcast day in a semi shaded area and I was at ISO 800/ F4.5 / 1/500 up till about 20 minutes before sunset then I had to go to ISO 1600. I had to go to ISO 800 30 minutes before sunset. My opinion I loose about 20 minutes of shooting time at sunset and sunrise, and gain a resolution boost the rest of the day.

I should have used a lower iso for less noise , but i was trying to get a shot of a vulture on the ground in the shadows when i saw this guy overhead and didnt have time to change any settings. this was with a brand new 7d II that i just picked up yesterday. the autofocus on this thing is amazing compared to my 70D for moving subjects

still trying to figure out my new 7D II , but this thing will focus on anything ! the focus is much faster than my 70D was and doesnt hunt at all , even with the 400 5.6+1.4 extender. here are a couple of shots from this afternoon.

I had very nice light late this afternoon to try out the 7D MKII .... the extra "reach" and increased pixels on the subject can be seen in this picture of a Mourning Dove.
