I think low contrast and low light situations definitely affect autofocus capability. Any atmospheric disturbance does too such as heat waves. Mist and fog really make it tough to get razor sharp images.

PS I went out at sunset tonight and found some Killdeer....have to process them and then I will post.
Thanks, Joel! It was very foggy all morning and just plan drab and cold up until about 10 minutes before I was leaving, then the sun came out and temps went up! I ended up just taking my good old 100-400mm which now I am glad I did since there wasn't much to shoot at anyway!

I have a few more killdeer shots to go thru also, looking forward to seeing yours!

    Wow...those Swallows are really cool.

Here are my Killdeer images from last night. Taken from my truck window using the 1D MKIV with 500mm + 1.4 TC.

Wow Joel, up close and personal with the 500mm. Truck and car windows work great as a blind for these guys. They really don't spook like they would on foot. Great shots.

Denise, glad you had a chance to go have some fun with the gear! Pictures look great!

Denise, is this three images combined or one shot? Great catch!

Thanks! It is actually just one shot, the three birds saved me a lot of time in CS5 though!

Are you kidding. I thought for sure that was photoshopped. Excellent capture.
