I was inspired by the lightning shots. Here is mine from 12th of August this summer. I was on the roof trying to capture the Perseids meteor shower (the location was sub-optimal but I managed to see a few meteors!) but the best show of the night was this awesome thundercloud that rolled in from the sea:

Wow, that strike is very vivid. Love the open sky in the shot.

Thank you for the positive comments. It's by far my best lightning shot so far. The cloud was just perfect with the open starry sky above. Added gear and settings info to the original post.

Sampsa that's fantastic --- and you even got the lightning to obey the rule of thirds! That's a very nice consolation prize for a cloudy meteor night.

What a wild shot. Lightning from top to bottom and so much clear sky. Very cool indeed.

It's also a good example of lightning being a danger even well in front of the storm center. Be careful out there with tripods.

Thanks for the comments guys! It was funny because of the timing with the maximum of Perseids meteor shower there was a few other shots of the same exact bolt from other photographers who posted them to a Finnish astronomy observation forum. Here's the link to two of them: http://www.taivaanvahti.fi/observations/show/16909 & http://www.taivaanvahti.fi/observations/show/16945 and on top of this someone even made an estimate of where it struck here. The text is in Finnish but you can see the photos or try Google translate. My photo is taken from the lower right spot of the two in the map so the distance to the strike was about 18km (11 miles).

Jonathan, took me a while to catch up with the thread. You have some awesome aurora shots. Could you give a few tips on shooting (other than the settings you have mentioned here) and processing them as I'm leaving for Lapland today an possibly going again during December. Or have you already written about the technique in another post?
