Tintern Abbey in Wales. Talk about a ghostly, spiritual place. Especially on a morning like this when the mist is rising off the fields. Tintern Abbey by Mark Johnson, on Flickr Tintern Abbey by Mark Johnson, on Flickr

I went to a scientific meeting last week in the Loire Valley of France. It rained much of the time, and was cloudy if it wasn't raining, but I managed to get out for a little bit of photography (usually after dinner, which in typical French fashion lasted at least three hours).

The first two shots are of the Saint-Gatien Cathedral in Tours.

    "Cathédrale Saint-Gatien de Tours"

    EOS 1D X, TS-E 17mm f/4L, 25s, f/8, ISO 800

    "Cathédrale Saint-Gatien de Tours Interior"

    EOS 1D X, EF 11-24mm f/4L USM @ 11mm, 1/40 s, f/4, ISO 2000

Dinner the second night was in the City Hall of Tours, and lasted until well after blue hour... (I cheated a little in PS to roll back time a bit ).

    "Hôtel de ville de Tours"

    EOS 1D X, TS-E 17mm f/4L, 8s, f/8, ISO 100

On the last night, we had an after-hours private tour of the Amboise Castle, a former royal residence and the site of Leonardo da Vinci's tomb. After the 6-course dinner, we were treated to a fireworks display outside the château, under the Harvest Moon.

    "Château d'Amboise"

    EOS M2, EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM @ 12mm, 1/30 s, f/5.6, ISO 125

    "Château d'Amboise Fireworks"
    EOS M2, EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM @ 11mm, 1/20 s, f/5.6, ISO 3200

During the ride back from Amboise, I had a conversation with a first-year graduate student from Sweden, who told me this was the first scientific meeting she'd ever attended. I had to tell her this one set the bar pretty high, and that they'd likely be downhill from here...

    Thanks for looking!

Very nice pictures Mark. I visited the Tintern Abbey with my parents when I was a child and I have memories of a very special place.

    Here's one from today :

Super shots on this thread, everyone! Neuro I especially like your first two cathedral shots... they really showcase the capability of the lenses (and of course the creative talent!). Very well done.
