I decided to head out last night to see if the aurora forecast was going to amount to anything. It did. I'm amazed at the show we got in Iowa. I'm glad I made the drive to a state park and escaped some of the light pollution. I've been to this park several times before, but never for landscape photography, and I never imagined I'd be looking for compositions with the aurora overhead.

Was a good test for the R6 II for landscape photography. I'm not sure my 5DS will ever get used after dark.

It was quite the show from what I heard. Not sure how far north in Iowa you are from roughly Omaha (I'm there), but some great shots here.

Lovely shots, @C4RBON! I looked for an aurora over the weekend, but didn't see anything. Then again, I was at home and I live in a Bortle class 5 area.

Back out taking pictures of my dog with the R6II and EF 70-300L. I've got everything set up where it nails eye focus if her head is clearly visible and she's not running at full speed. After all this rain we got, the plant shot up to my waist level, which is well over her head. So with the brush in the way it was difficult for the camera to lock on focus (admittedly it was difficult for me to even see her, let alone take pictures). The camera usually picks her curled tail up first and thinks its an eye, which I find amusing. If she'd just stay still for half a second I'd get more keepers!

Standing still, it locks on her eye quickly and I'm getting close to 100% keepers.


Since the grass is over her head, she stands on her hind legs to get a look where she's going, which was very difficult to capture, since her head is only visible above the plants for a split second and then she's back under.


This is a crop of a 300mm shot. Focus is a bit in front of her face, but at these resolutions it looks fine.
