Well received my 40 in the mail today. Hoping they'll allow me to take it to the concert tonight and see how it works in low light. I would have to say that the focusing is faster than the 35mm f/2 but definitely not as fast as something with a USM or even the Af motor of the 50mm f/1.4. It is pretty quick and almost quiet. If I get anything good for pictures in the next day or two I will post some.

I was surprised they only put this at $199. I figured just adding the word pancake gave it at least another $100 maybe more because of the novelty.
This isn't really a fair fight, but have you used any tamron lens? If so, is it about the same focus speed as the 28-75ish lens they offer?

I own the 17-50mm DI II (non-vc) version and use that on a regular basis. I would have to say that it is as fast or maybe just a little faster than the tamron. Seems to grab focus a hair quicker. If racking it from one end to the other, it doesn't have super speed but quick enough. It usually locks on pretty quickly and doesn't hunt. That was what I was looking for. Maybe the STM motor makes it seem a little faster because it doesn't buzz quite as loud. Who knows. We're talking about fractions of a second. I used it at the concert tonight in terrible light and thought it did ok. I believe I will be keeping it. Little upset that I forgot to press the record button while attempting to video my kid dancing to a song, but all in all, the night was good.
Here are a few from the Train Concert I attended. Camera were frowned upon unless they were cell phones so having the pancake attached to a large camera threw them off. Plus it fit nicely in the wife's purse so no camera bag. I didn't get to use it that much due to my 3 boys with me and 2 were cranky.
