Nice hummingbird Bill....I like the flower in the shot with the bird, I haven't been able to do that yet....it's been so hot lately (90-100F) I have not been out shooting...it's just too uncomfortable.

you guys are having a lot of fun taking hummingbird picture and it seems like there are multi flash involved, I 'm kind of hesitate to get into this because i have no idea with the flash photography.anyway, this is a really nice capture and I like the black background very much!

Thanks for the kudos Joel....the 3 H's finally broke here last week....it was getting pretty old. LOL


Due to all the heat and lack of rain, my HB garden is pretty anemic. I was surprised to see this HB at the Coleus. Fortunately I was (relatively)prepared for the shot.


JJ...you're welcome,yours isa nice BIF capture.


Also JJ, unlike Joel, all my HBs are shot w/natural light....I only have one flash (580 EX) and when I use it, I blow their eyes out.

Bill, Just like you, I only have one off camera flash and no light stand. But I think I have a short term solution. I am planning to shoot some humingbirds this evening and wanted to get the flash off camera, but my feeder is about 7 feet high, so I started looking around my garage and this what I came up with:


1. Borrow the Cristmas tree stand


2. Grab a piece of PVC pipe and cut to length


3. Insert PVC in stand and drop a brrom stick down the middle for added rigidity


4. Get a small piece of wood or stiff plastic about 1/4 thick and 3"x3"square


5. Attach a PVC plug to the wood with a small nut and bolt for a light platform


6. Sit the plug (and wood) over the top of PVC pipe---it should be pretty snug, but not glued.


7. Put the feet on your flash and attach to wood with tie wraps or bull clamps--


Now I have my flash off camera, at the proper h<span style="font-family: Verdana; color: black; font-size: 9pt;"]eight and I can easily point the head at the bird and the body at my camera so the IR works.---


<span style="font-family: Verdana; color: black; font-size: 9pt;"]I figure I have about $1.85invested and as long as I can confidently attach my flash--it should work ok.

Nice shots! The forum supports to 800px wide. If you show larger photos they will only show a part, but the image is there entirely. When adding pictures you can also import larger files than 800px and have the forum decrease their size by setting boundaries in the import media tab. Also...nice site [H]
