Jordan, let me clarify. I work 8 nights in a row, 9 hrs/night. Yeah, the 6 days off are nice, but the 8 days on are very very long.[]

I also live about 15 minutes from the ocean, but my camera broke before I got any pictures of seabirds.[] I just thought that you might want too try your hand at other types of birds, like small birds.

I definitely like to shoot song birds. I think they're quite a challenge to shoot because they're just too small.

Use a 2X extender then, I know the IQ suffers a bit. But itis WAY EASIER that way. With IS you willhave a much easier time then me. Small birds challenge even great photographers, that's partly why I am still in photography. I love the challenge.

Nate would also lose autofocus on his 40D with the 500mm f/4L IS &amp; 2x extender. The xxD series won't autofocus at an effective open aperture smaller than f/5.6. A 2x extender would put his 500m to f/8 max. He could use autofocus with the 1.4x extender.

Song birds are small so they're hard to shoot, but what harder is to get them in good light, good head angle, good eye contact, good pose, clear background and no distracting object in front of the bird in order to have a presentable image. I have no problem with shooting song birds with my bare 500 and the 40D. I definitely like to shoot song birds to diversify my portfolio, but what really keeps me from actually doing it is the lack of action.

So happy with the 300mm f/4 L IS as compared to the 75-300mm f/4-5.6!
