Thanks Jayson.....I really ran up a big water bill this month

Still fiddling with the 300mm f/2.8L + Version III 2X TC.
ISO 3200 (very cloudy here today)

Using the 1D MKIV this combo focuses very fast, almost as if a teleconverter is not on the lens. The images are not quite as sharp straight out of the camera and they are a little noisier compared with the Version II 1.4 TC but they seem to sharpen easily enough and the noise isn't too objectionable. Also keep in mind I have done no AF microadjustment.

The overall performance in my opinion so far is excellent and certainly a viable alternative for bird photography. I will continue trying it and hope to get better conditions so I can use a lower ISO. I will also do some test shots with the 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS USM soon.

Joel, nice GBH and egret shots. you used fast shutter speed does make the image sharp. most of the time for me, 1/1600 shutter speed or slower can't lead very sharp image if hand held or shoot BIF.

Thanks JJphoto....yes a fast shutter is important for sharpness, especially bouncing around in a boat!

Thanks Denise, I have been following your thread on the opportunity to make and sell some prints at a craft fair....I have been considering doing the same and I really hope you take your friend up on his offer, you have some really nice work and I think you will be successful. The regular posters here have given you great advice.

These are a couple more shots with the 300m + 2X Version III with a more diffused light but I had to use ISO 1600 to get enough shutter speed

I've had quite a treat the past few days as the White-Crowned Sparrow has come through my yard on their migration back north. I took some pictures yesterday and these are 2 of my favorites. Both are taken with 60D, 135L, 1.4x TC II. The first at f/5 and the second at f/8. I like the expression in the second one.
