OK, I don't normally shoot birds, but this one was sitting in my backyard (which is on the 8th green of a golf course). He just perched himself on the 9th tee marker and dared me to shoot him. Is this a kestrel? Canon 7D with 70-200 f/4 L at 200mm handheld, 1/3200 sec at f/4, ISO 200.

Actually here's a better shot of it, showing its tail as well... same EXIF as above.

Rob, I am by no means a bird expert, But I don't think this is a kestral, at least not one that I have seen. I tried a little bird ID on whatbird.com and this guy matches a lot of features of a "Red Shouldered Hawk, but not a full grown male. Maybe a Juvi or a female. Take a look here: http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/40/overview/Red-shouldered_Hawk.aspx be sure and look at all of the photos and you'll see what I am talking about.

thanks Denise!, I did get really close this time, the click sounds of the shutter scared bird away and I couldn't get the whole bird in the frame when it took off because i was too close to the bird[]
