50D and Auto External ("E") mode of 580EX II

I read from review mentioning that in order to use Auto External ("E") mode of 580EX II, a compatible body must be used. The review stated that Canon 1D Mark III is the first to offer this feature.


Can 50D utilize this mode?

Yes, from what I've read, all EOS cameras after the 1dMkIII support the auto external mode. Here's an article form Canon on this mode if you're interested (its old so it says only the 1D Mk III is supported):
