In the games industry we always called them "God Rays". No idea what anybody else calls them.
Damn, that's exactly what I was going to say.
And coincidentally, I shot some like that this morning too (I was already late for work so what's wrong with another 5 mins taking a photo on the way?)
Those things have always reminded me of either a Bugs Bunny cartoon, think the 'What's Opera Doc' scene with the rays shining down on the fat horse. Otherwise I half except a foot to come down out of them and step on something...
An awful lot of electrons were terribly inconvenienced in the making of this post.

I also call it "irritating", because the camera never has the dynamic range to capture this in its total full glory.
I call it Luck combined with a skilled photographer to create a beautiful shot!
