    canon lens for 30D

    Hello,

I am new to this site. I would like to be able to purchase another lens for my camera.

I want to spend no more than 500.00. I photograph mostly portraits and weddingsbut want to expand to some sports such as skateboarders. What would be the best all around lens for something like that. I want it to be a low light lens as well. Preferably IS. But, not necessary.

    I have a 28-135 3.5IS, and a 85mm EF 1.8, 35mm EF 1.2, 70-300 4.5.6 IS.

    Thank you for any help.

I suggest Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (VR or otherwise).

I agree with Daniel. In the $500 range the only other option is the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8. This is also an excellent lens with a little more reach than the 17-50 but may not be wide enough in some cases. Based on what you say you want to use it for this may be a better choice but in this price range you are very limited.

I also agree getting one of the Tammy's would be your best choice, either the 17-50 or the 28-75.

    Thanks Daniel!

I have always bought canon lenses. But, is the Tamron a good quality lens?

    Thanks Garrett!

So the 17-50 would be a good wide angle for my needs? Is it a low light lens too?

Thank you Mark for your input. The 17-50 would be a good wide angle lens right?

    I appreciate everyones feedback.

    Thanks,

Yes, it is a good wide angle to short telaphoto. 27 or 28 mm is standard for your camera. This lens is one of only two that has made Bryan's recommended list. I would give you the link but it seems the link is messed up.

Here's Bryans review of the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 DII

Tamron lenses come with a SIX year warranty. They are very quick to fix any issues.

The new IS version of this lens has just been released it is called "VC" for "vibration compensation"

It is here: Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR DI-II VCbut I think it's a little more than you were planning on spending.

I have the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 DII. Best value for your price range. IQ is comparable to the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM from Canon.
