I especially like the lighting and depth-of-field of the first two. Very well done.
thanks Sean... coming from you it makes me even more determined to practice and improve my pictures.
anything you suggest I could do to make them better?
Agreed, nice work James. The second one is the pick for me compositionally, but the saturation is dialled up a little in that one compared to the other two.
Sean would be the one to explain how some different lighting(side or back) might allow the DOF to be slightly increased, but still deliver some of that 3D pop or oomph that we see in a lot of his portraits.

I really like the perspective of the first one. You dropped down a bit and captured your boy from a vantage point slightly lower than his own, rather than straight on or from above.
@ Steve U... Thanks so much for thumbs up..saturation was at +1 .....
@thekinb....yes I was trying to look for a "good" angle I guess I got it with this shot.
thanks guys...
It's often good practice to capture kids from their level. We look down on kids (naturally speaking), so framing the shot from a lower perspective makes the shot that much more visually interesting.
As for the depth of field, it's 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other. Slightly more or slightly less, I think the shot would have been just as good.
