Why? What does the 17-55mm not offer that you need?
By all accounts, the 17-55 is "L" quality. The comparable 17-40L is an f4 v. f2.8 which you have. Plus you lose 15mm on the long end. IMO, not really an "upgrade".
There is beauty in simplicity.
1DX | 16-35L II | 24-70L II | 50/1.2L | 70-200/2.8L IS II | 100L Macro | 100-400L II | 300/2.8L IS II | 1.4x III TC | 2x III TC | 580EX II | MT-24EX | lots of stuff
Neuro might swap you his 600 for the 17-55, it's an L Canon isn't it John?

Where do you think it is failing? Do you us the 17-24 i.e. very wide and 2.8 vs. f4. If you don't shoot wide, and open, the 24-105 might be an alternative. HOWEVER.
I own both a 600d and 5dIII - and 17-55 and 24-105. The 600d with the 24-105 is not all that wide and gets plenty long - the f4 gets dicey once inside.
If you could let us know what you are looking for it would be helpful.
I think the 17-55 is a darn good lens....

Here on my Flicker page I have some test shots I did with my 17-40 on my 5D and on my 1DmkIIn. Test subject was a brick wall.
