    IS = image stabilization
    II, III, etc. = successive versions of that lens
    DO = diffractive optics
    USM = ultrasonic motor for autofocus

    EF-S means a lens designed to be used only on the crop bodies, excluding the 10D. So XT, XS, T3, XTI, XSI, T1i, T2i, T3i, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, and 7D.

    Exclamation

    "S" (as in EF-S) are lenes that are designed for 1.6X crop body (also sometimes designated as digital only). That would be any rebel or the semi-pro bodies starting with 7D and higher numbers (e.g., 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, and 60D). The EF-S lenses are not designed for the 5D and 1D cameras.

    If I got any of that wrong, then someone please correct me.

    I'd brought up the white squares or red circles denoting compatibility.

    I think that's all of them for Canon lenses.
    Now just don't ask anyone to decode a Tamron lens name...
    An awful lot of electrons were terribly inconvenienced in the making of this post.

    Good luck, it feels like they add 14 abbreviations at the end of every lens just to make things interesting! Just one more reason to buy Canon!

    Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM

    EF: Electro-Focus (I think)
    L: Luxury (I don't see anything luxurious about owning a lens)
    IS: Image Stabilzation
    II: version two, second generation
    USM: Ultra Sonic Motor, your lens autofocus motor
