What's wrong with my Canon 24-105 L lens??Please help!

I have just bought a Canon 24-105mm lens, I was testing if it has "Flare" problem. the image its like this:

Can anyone tell me is that big bubble thing on the down left conner normal? my camera is a Canon 550D, the lens date code is UY0923 and with a HOYA PRO1 UV filter when I took this photo.

This shot looks like a deliberate attempt to create flare. I don't think it's a fair test of how well the lens will control flare in normal situations. In general, you should avoid shooting into a bright light source like this. If you must include the sun, try to put it closer to the corner of the image. Try it without the filter attached.I think that the light is reflecting off the front element of the lens and bouncing back off the filter to create the flare pattern.


The 24-105L lens does show some flare at wide angles, according to Bryan's review: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-4-L-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx. You should be able to avoid this by recomposing the shot and using a slightly longer focal length.

I also wanted to add that if you position the sun in the corner of the image, you should get a much better exposure reading so your subject won't be so dark. You should also try using fill flash in a shot like this.

<span style="font-weight: normal;"]The short answer is "nothing." The reported issue with early copies of the lens was a 'rays of light' effect. Even though Bryan's review mentions that the 24-105mm is reasonably resistant to flare in the review of that lens, in another review (comparing to a 24mm prime lens), he states, "TheCanon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lensis a great lens, though shooting into the sun is not one of its strengths."

In the first picture taken almost directly into the sun that kind of lens flaring is to be expected. Additionally, I don't recommend doing that too much, not if it is high in the sky.

These last two pictures look like normal shutter blade diffraction spikes, which btw will be more noticeable with smaller aperture settings.

Yes, for camera sensor direct sunlight is not healthy.


But in these two last photos there isn't sun. There is only moon at night []

Although the risk of damage to your sensor from the Moon is highly unlikely because it is only reflected light, It is still very bright. The amount of flare I am seeing, given the angles of each picture looks typical of most lenses to me.


Has the OP tried taking pictures of the Moon at various angles, with and without a lens hood as well as various apertures to see how much flare there is.
