I started with a Sigma flash. It was very inconsistent with the exposure. I replaced it with the 580EX with much better results. I later added the 580 EXII to my collection. Both canon flashes performed equally as well. The 580 EXII now has a problem with the lever lock not holding snug. If the camera is tilted forward the flash looses contact and fails to fire. As a result the 580 EX has become my primary flash.
I am looking at purchasing another flash. Shootsmarter.com recommends the Metz 58 AF-1. I have also been looking at the Nissin Di866. What are your opinions of the Metz and Nissin flashes compared to the Canon in exposure consistency and in auto focus assist?
