VF Magnificaiton(?) Spec - What is it?

Will someone please help me understand what the viewfinder specs mean?

I understand the percentage - that's obviously the VF's coverage, how much of a scene you'll see through the viewfinder. But what is the "x" number? I assume it's magnification but I don't understand how it applies to a viewfinder.

As always, thank you for any thoughts you'd care to share.

    I always thought eg, the 5DII has a 36mm sensor and a .71x viewfinder, and since it has 95% coverage, the size of the 5DII viewfinder is 36 x .71 x .95 = 24.3mm.
