I heard that it's because Nikon is about to release a D700-type camera with the D3X's sensor. Just a rumor, though. []
I think it's a simple matter of time--as time passes, demand for a product declines, sales fall off, and the price reflects that. All cameras decline in price over time...
5D Mark II has been around for over a year, it's about time for a price drop. This happens with every DSLR body
I agree with everyone else, it's pretty much just S.O.P.
What I find interesting is that the price drop came so long after the introduction. The original 5D was immediately discounted by $300, then another $300 just a few months after it came out. I'm glad that this one is selling much better.
