As I am new to the whole Macro thing, I know some of you have some good pointers! Bring it! []

    Paul,

I would try some shots with a more narrow aperture, maybe in the range of 5.6-7.1.

Increasing your depth of field might help to bring more of your subject into focus.

    Nice colors BTW...

    Nice composition.

I agree with Todd... definitely stop this one way down.

I like this picture, very nice

Even stoped down this guy will be mostly out of focus. I agree narrow aperture. Use tripods when you can. Just like potraits of people and animals focus on the eyes. My best results have always been for bee

    Ditto.

I notice that you used flash with the shot. IMO, one of the primary reasons for using a flash with macro photography (Canon has two different flashes just for that purpose) is so that you can stop way down for increased depth of field. Note that subject distance affects DoF, and at macro distances and wide apertures. For your lens/body combination at the minimum focus distance of the lens (where you get 1:1 macro), the depth of field at f/2.8 is 0.03" (less than 1 mm)! Even stopping down to the narrowest aperture possible (and living with the effects of diffraction), you can only get 0.3" of DoF - and f/32 requires a LOT of light!

Thank you all for the pointers! I am learning a lot on TDP from all of you.

I did take one image of that Bee that was stopped down some so it is a little more like you all are describing.

EXIF is identical to above except this one is at ƒ/6.3 and the first was ƒ/2.8. I am going to experiment today with smaller apertures. Wish me luck!
