    New 100-400mm 4-5.6L on CanonRumors.com

He says he got the details from what is usually a solid source. What interested me most, and what turned me off to the current 100-400 when I ultimately decided on the 400 f/5.6 is that this one is rumored to have a ring zoom as opposed to the push/pull. This article was published shortly after showing details to Canon's latest patent (nov 5th) for this lens.

    Taken from: http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/11/canon-ef-100-400-f4-5-6l-is-soonish-cr2/

"Finally on its way?I was told today that a new EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS will be making its debut “soonish”. It will be after the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x is officially announced.
It could be tested at Euro 2012 before being announced.
    Features
    • Ring zoom (not push/pull)
    • Latest IS System
    • 82mm Filter Size
    • Weather Sealed
    • Slightly heavier than the current model
    • Slightly faster f/4 at 100mm (Current is f/4.5)
    • Retail around $2800 USD
    CR’s Take
A few folks want an EF 400 f/5.6L IS, I’d think this sort of product would fill the void. I’d expect it to be optically awesome.

This comes from a pretty solid source, though lenses are always hard to nail down.

Now I'm finally interested in the 100-400. We'll see how the Bryan shows the sharpness compared to the 400 f/5.6L on the long end though.

Adobe, give us courage to edit what photos must be altered, serenity to delete what cannot be helped, and the insight to know the one from the other.

I actually like the push-pull design - it's very fast to use. But, I would not mind a ring zoom as long as it's an extending design (like the 70-300 L, for example). If it's an internal zoom like the 70-200mm series, it will have to be longer than the current 400mm f/5.6L, and IMO, one of the big advantages of the current 100-400mm is the (relatively) compact size when retracted.

I also like the push pull design a surprising amount. I thought I would hate it, but I prefer it at times.

weather sealing and better IS are the features that jump out at me for a new 100-400.

but for double the price it better have much better IQ too

What! CR think the togs at Euro 2012 are going to be using 100-400 f5.6, Im sorry but I don't think so. Every football tog I know who shoot the UK Leagues including the Premiership ALL use f2.8 either 300 of 400 mm, I'd take everything CR say with a very large pinch of salt.

A few folks want an EF 400 f/5.6L IS, I’d think this sort of product would fill the void.
And the current lens does not fill the same void ???????
