I'm waiting for the pictures taken of the damage. I will forward them to a specialist in corrosion.

I also remembered that when I opened the box with the camera, there was no "silica gel" (the small bag with stuff to absorb moisture). Perhaps this can explain the corrosion in the camera?

    Latest news:

Two experts in metals and corrosions has email me and they say that the amount of corrosion is severe considered the short time the camera has been used and the time since it a possible exposure to moisture.

The camera was bought June 16th and stopped working July 22nd. Since then the battery has been removed from the camera.

So my question is: Is there any chance that the camera may have been exposed to moisture before I bought it?

    Jorn,

The photos show electrolysis not corrosions.

This is caused by electrical current flowing thru a conductive liquid - such as salt water, etc. This could have occur within a few hours. At the low voltage inside the camera the liquid would have to have been highly contaminated, plus the water inside the camera had to be large droplets not just a thin coating of moisture. You can see traces of large droplets around the capacitors, second photo lower left (K).

Are you sure that water did not leak inside your plastic bag?

I cannot be 100% sure that no water entered the plastic bag, but I did not find any traces of water on the camera itself while in the plastic bag.

And if any water came into the camera it would have been pure rain water.

As written before, my 30D has been exposed to rain (~15 minutes) while I was out walking with it over my shoulder (I had no place to seek shelter). And I have been using it outside during the winter for one full day where we had wet snow during 1/2 of the day. It still haven't complained (after 70000+ exposures). One should assume that a 5D should resist a few drops of water for an hour or two?

    Jorn,

A lesson learned for this kind of problem is to remove the battery from the camera ASAP.

This would have prevented the electrolysis. You would have to let the camera dry out before reinserting the battery and would require a day or two above 70 to 80 degrees with the end cap removed.

    Sorry for your issue.

And that is what I did when I noticed that the camera did not work properly. I removed the battery right after I got the error. I let it open without battery, CF card and lens for days.

Bob, out of curiosity, where did you find this reference chart?
We're a Canon/Profoto family: five cameras, sixteen lenses, fifteen Profoto lights, too many modifiers.

Just came across another discussion forum [View:http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=31592&hl=].

25% failure on the 5dmkII during an Antarctica expedition. Not good.

Please research that further before throwing up your hands in disgust.

Light rain on a couple of days, early on. Salt spray was always an issue. -3C to +2C.

Weather was the culprit in some failure cases, but salt spray and hard knocks in others.

A Nikon 80-400mm lens came apart.

Of the 26 5D2 cameras (one-third of the cameras on board were 5D2), six failed at one time or another. Three of these recovered. One of those cameras was a Canon loaner, that may have seen adverse conditions previously.

Several 5D2s with grips collected water at the camera/grip junction.

    A 1Ds3 had intermittent problems, and a 1D3 kept reporting Error 99.

I'm sorry that your camera is having problems. That said, I don't think this Antarctica trip is a valid baseline. However, another review on that site referred to the 5D2 as a "plastic computer", which is probably a suitable description of the camera.
