    Critique for lake near Whistler

I would like to read some critique for this shot of a lake near Whistler.

    5D2, 24mm f/1.4 II, f/11, 1/160, ISO 100, Lightroom 2.4.

DNG raw file (for programs like Photoshop CS3 that don't support the 5D2 directly)

I love the composition. I think the rock(s) in the foreground really draw(s) your eye upward to the rest of the frame. I'd probably like to see a touch more saturation but I know that's not your style :-)

    Terrific picture!

I was going to say that about the saturation, especially the blue in the sky, but didn't have the guts. Glad to have you step up, Mark! I think the color palette is beautiful, though, and couldn't be better if it were staged.

I know you don't like lots of saturation, but a slight curves adjustment, using the LAB color mode, does bring out some more color in the rocks, and reduces the luminescence of the sky to a more pleasing blue. The lightness channel was showing a bit of underexposure at the bright end, so I also increased the slope of the curve at that end.

I'm envious that you have access to such beautiful places.

Keep in mind, I rarely adjust contrast or saturation...but the first thing I thought when I saw the original image was that it needed a touch of both. Otherwise, I really like it. ;-)

    Alan,

I don't really like the color of the rocks anymore. The picture seems to have a different, but undesirable hue that it didn't start with. Not sure how to describe it.

Apart from the rocks, I don't see much of a different hue to the image. This is where personal tastes come into play, I would suppose.
