The field is just over 2 degrees, or a bit less than five full moons wide.

Lagoon Nebula (M8) and Triffid Nebula (M20)

    5DII, Astrophysics 130GT + field flattener, 819mm @ f/6.3, 121 seconds unguided, ISO 1600

The field flattener really seems to control those star images at the corners (this is almost the whole 35mm frame). And I spent $90 on a special EOS adapter which was supposed to control vignetting, and it seems to have worked.

If I have the energy and time tonight, I'll try a longer exposure with the autoguider.

    Jon, hi!

Nice picture. Can you post a crop of Trifid Nebula?

    Thanks.

    Wow! Thanks so much Keith!!

I finally pulled my Home Depot tile board out from the basement and I am loving it for white-seemless. I did some portraits for a 4-month-old today and used it again. I'll post some of those later.

I had good fun this week playing with my new 100-400L.

Up until now my longest lens was the 70-200F4L so I haven't done any birding before or really any work at this kind of focal length. Any comments and suggestions would be more than welcome. I'm least happy with the first photo because of the lack of colour (overcast day) but I like the framing, the age of the bird, and the focus hit pretty well so I included it.

All of the photos are uncropped and larger resolutions can be found on my Flickr:

Little slow on PP this week. Here are my contributions. Bumped up the contrast a little in the Fluffy weed. Don't remember what it is called right off hand.

    Hi Alex,

Sorry I took so long, but here it is.

You can see that 1) there is quite a lot of noise 2) the tracking isn't perfect, the stars are a little elongated even after only 2 minutes and 3) the seeing wasn't great, so everything is a little blurry.

Last night I took an autoguided 12 minute exposure which came out a little better. I also tried a 40 minute autoguided exposure, but I accidentally unplugged my computer at the start of the exposure and the thing died in the middle. Very frustrating. I'll probably try again tomorrow.
