Thread: 70-300mm L IS

    70-300mm L IS

I have just seen the new 70-300 L IS available for pre-order at £1599. Which is £800 more than the 70-200mm L IS f4. I know the price will drop a bit but I think I might just get myself the 70-200 and maybe a 1.4x extender at some point.

    Good or bad idea?

Yikes! For that price, I'd definitely stick with the 70-200 f/4 L IS. With the teleconverter it wont match the 70-300 L for sharpness, but it will still be good enough for most purposes.

Isn't that just as much as the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II ? Sure, the 70-300 is lighter, but it seems like a lot less lens for the money. It had better be good

Isn't Adorama listing it at $1,500?

    That seems more reasonable.

Yes, but that's USD -- the post was about British Pounds. If you live in the UK and order the camera online from in the USA, you have to pay all the same VAT (like salestax) that you would have if you bought it locally, and I've heard that you lose the warranty benefits (like buying "gray market").

I know some UK folks who will fly all the way to New York just so they can get the cheaper price and sneak out of paying the taxes. (Just as many Americans illegaly evade taxes by not sending in a payment every month for all their online purchases.)

Yep, and with 1 USD going for 0.65 British pounds, 1,599 Britsh pounds would be $2,460 USD. A quick internet search lists the current British VAT at 17.5% and$960 on top$1,500 is 64%. So it could be that the base rate is higher in addition to the VAT or that there are other taxes in there.Buta baseUS price is $1,500 USD plus a 17.5% VAT would be $1,762.50 (USD)or £1,145 (British pounds).

I just did a few searches for "Price of BritishCanon XX"....seems pretty typical that what they pay in pounds is slightly more than what we pay inUSD.

I can see why your friends make the trip.

It's different almost from country to country. At least the normal prices are. A few weeks ago I looked at prices in the US (I live in the Netherlands, Europe. Which is pretty much next to the England so you would assume the prices are about the same) and while some lenses are more expensive here, some are also cheaper... Different places, different markets.

But still...1599 pounds is equal to 1913 euros which I can almost buy a 70-200 f2.8L IS II for...sigh... there must have been something wrong. If not I'm saving up for the 70-200 f4L IS with 1.4 extender [A]

I can see the trip as well [ap]

Sheiky you are right. The 70-200 2.8 is £1699 here in the UK. That's only £100 more than the pre-order price of the 70-300.

Whilst the 70-200 f4 ISI have seen is in a sale the full retail price only seems around £950. Still a lot cheaper than the new 70-300.

I think I'm gonna go for the 70-200 f4 IS. It look like a great lens.
