    Canon Service Notice: EOS 5D

I just received this in my e-mail. Anyone heard of this issue?

"We have discovered that, in rare instances, the
main mirror of some EOS 5D Digital SLR cameras
may detach due to deterioration in the strength of the
adhesive. Accordingly, we would like to convey the
details and our service policy concerning this phenomenon. "

Heard A LOT of 5D mirror detach cases, not a surprise at all. Actually, I'm surprised that Canon just addressed this issue after 3 years of the introduction of 5D!!

I have not had this issue, yet. I guess it's something to look for in the future...

I thought they were talking about my MkII when I got the email. I never even had the MkI.

Bryan had already written about that in his news section.

Colin, if I were you, I'd send my 5D to canon for reinforcement right away (assuming they accept cameras which are not damaged yet too).

    I'll ask Canon about it.

Just got an apology email from Canon for any concern about my 5D MarkII they may have caused me by sending me the alert.

They are looking into there system to make sure this doesn't happen again.

For you 5D owners, listen up. I just told this to Bryan, too.

I purchased my 5D used, from my cousin, who is a wedding photographer.

The mirror on the camera came loose, just as described in the service notice. But, when the thing let loose, it proceeded to scratch the sensor.

The camera was under warranty, but Canon refused to fix (replace) the sensor. Oh, they did fix the mirror, but the sensor was not considered in need of warranty work, even though it wouldn't have been damaged if it hadn't been for the mirror flying off.

The result: a $600 repair bill.

So, beware. I'd check that mirror right now, and if it seems loose in any way, don't wait for this to happen to you.

The first thing I thought when I had read about the issue on the news section was: how can this happen without damaging the sensor?!?

Obviously... it can't = it does damage the sensor :-(

And canon won't replace it you said, that's a shame.
