I have to say, I'm really liking the photo ops on the west coast. I've been using The Photographer's Ephemeris app on an iPad to plan my sunset shots, and it definitely makes things easy. This one is from Crescent City, California.

Denise - It looks like you are getting some nice sharp shots with you new lenses.

Jonathan - Another great sunset. Also a great location and compisition.

Nice, Denise. I'll take your advice to heart in about 8 hours.

Perfect sunset, Jonathan. I wish I had an ocean, or even some water near here. Next month I'll be back in MA for a few days. I'll be using that app to plan some shots.

A couple from today. Spent the afternoon in an indoor garden.

Thank you for the kind words.
I had fun. It was pretty easy... Meijer Gardens has so many butterflies and a great variety of fauna, but no tripods or mono pods so I had to hand hold everything. This year the keeper rate was much better because I used FoCal to get the lens dialed in with my camera (+16 adjustment).

Pat I almost bought the same plant a few weeks ago Nice shots, beautiful butterflies. The second shot is my favorite as well.
Wow +16 on an L-lens...that's just within the boundaries. Did you calibrate on different focusing distances? I remember that my 100mmL was spot on perfect on close-up distances, but was severely front-focusing on full body portrait distances.

    Thanks.

I did do the calibration at differnt focal lengths. I tend to use this one mostly for close up work so I used the results for closer. However, at greater distances it was actually worse if anything. It is a sharp lens... just poor focus calibration. I probably should have took it back to get adjusted. I did the FoCal just within a year of buying it, but it seems to work good now. I always thought I was the problem before I made the adjustments, and I ended up dong a lot of manual focusing. But in the end, it works good now.

I need to get a more ridgid plan on testing lenses when I buy them and sending them back when they are out of whack. Live and learn.

Well +16 is close to, but still within the reach of the focus adjustment, so you're good to go It wouldn't take a better shot if it only needed +3 for example.(it's easier to sell if needed that's the only thing I can think off)
